BETHLEHEM, PA. (June 28, 2017) – Miguel Cruz (16-0, 11 KOs) earned a unanimous decision to defeat Alex Martin (13-2, 5 KOs) and remained unbeaten in a welterweight rematch that headlined Premier Boxing Champions TOE-TO-TOE TUESDAYS on FS1 and BOXEO DE CAMPEONES on FOX Deportes Tuesday night from Sands Bethlehem Events Center in Bethlehem, Pa.

After winning a split-decision against Martin in their January showdown, Cruz kept his perfect record intact by scoring two knockdowns before getting the decision in their 10-round matchup.

“I honestly didn’t feel great in our first fight and when I re-watched it, I thought Martin won,” said Cruz. “That made me train ever harder than ever to prove that I have the skills and power to compete at the world class level, and I think I did that tonight.”

Cruz got off to a fast start by landing a huge left hook that caught Martin and dropped him late in the first round. Martin was able to get to his feet and recover just before the bell sounded to end the round.

Martin kept trying to work on the inside but Cruz was determined to push back and consistently landed with big power shots. Another left hook in round four sent Martin to the mat again, although he appeared less effected than during the first knockdown.

“I was fighting his fight tonight,” said Martin. “I just didn’t put on my best performance. The first knockdown was a real knockdown but the second knockdown he hit me in the back of the head.”

Round five saw Martin begin to box more effectively, landing several right hands before a left hook landed low, sending Cruz to the canvas and causing referee Gary Rosato to halt the bout while Cruz recovered.

When the action resumed Martin continued to turn the tide of the fight. His movement was very effective and his success with the left hand was consistent throughout rounds five through eight.

“Martin was super tough,” said Cruz. “I didn’t think he would make it out of the second round but he definitely gave me problems. I was trying to stop him.”

Down on the scorecards because of the early knockdowns, Martin’s comeback effort came up short as Cruz was able to hold Martin off in the final two rounds on his way to earning the decision in the eyes of all three judges by the score of 96-92.

“I knew I was getting back into the fight but I’m not making any excuses tonight,” said Martin. “He won the fight fair and square, congratulations to him.”

“I trained for Martin like he was the champion of the world and that’s how I’m going to train for every fight of my career,” said Cruz. “It was a tremendous fight, I’m glad I got the victory. I just want to go back to Puerto Rico and celebrate my birthday tomorrow.”

Additional televised action saw Clarence Booth (15-3, 8 KOs) stop Puerto Rico’s Anthony Mercado (10-3, 9 KOs) in the fourth round of their welterweight contest.

The taller Mercado had success early in the fight while Booth tried to work his way inside and attack the body. Mercado landed a pair of clean right hands in each of the first two rounds that appeared to daze Booth.

“He was a tough fighter,” said Booth. “I needed to get loose for the first couple rounds. I was tense in the beginning.”

Fighting out of St. Petersburg, Florida, Booth was able to weather the storm in the first two rounds and began to turn the tide in round three with a clean right hand that staggered Mercado.

Booth kept the momentum going and quickly put Mercado on the canvas with a pair of right hands in the fourth round. Mercado was able to get to his feet but eventually Booth broke through again and stunned Mercado with more right hands. The final flurry prompted referee Eric Dali to call a halt to the bout 1:30 into the fourth frame.

“I had a couple of tough losses, but now I am on a major comeback,” said Booth. “I’m so happy to have this opportunity on television and I made the best of it. My promoter Marshall Kauffman and King’s Promotions will get me great opportunities in the future.”

“He hit me with a good shot,” said Mercado. “He jabbed and came with a right hand that I didn’t see coming. I will be back even better.”

In Non-televised action:

Nicholas Hernandez won a six-round majority decision over Grayson Blake in a junior middleweight bout.

Hernandez, 154 lbs of Lebanon, PA won by scores of 59-55, 58-56 and 57-57, and is now 7-2. Blake, 153.4 lbs of State College, PA is 6-5-1.

Jesus Lule scored a 2nd round stoppage over Ismael Serrano in a scheduled four round lightweight bout.

Lule swarmed Serrano and landed a flurry of punches, and the fight was stopped at 2:10.

Lule, 135.7 lbs of Fort Myers, FL is now 11-22-1 with two knockouts. Serrano, 134.5 lbs of Bethlehem, PA is 4-2.

In a featherweight slugfest that was taped for broadcast, Avery Sparrow was able to outlast Isaelin Florian via six-round unanimous decision.

Sparrow decked Florian in round when he landed a hard overhand right and followed it up with two more hard rights. Florian came right back and dropped Sparrow with a left. Early in round two, Sparrow registered a 2nd knockdown when he landed another straight right hand.

Florian fought much of the 2nd half of the fight with an injured left arm, and that hampered him both offensively and defensively as Sparrow was able to hit Florian with regularity.

In round four, Florian drilled Sparrow with an overhand left that sent him to the canvas for a 2nd time.

Sparrow, 127.6 lbs of Philadelphia, took all cards by 58-54 scores, and is now 7-1. Florian, 126.2 lbs of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic loses for the first time, and is now 6-1.

In a battle of Allentown based super lightweights, Jesus Perez won a four round unanimous decision over Christian Molina.

In round one, Perez floored Molina with a right hand. Later in the round, Perez connected with three flush right hands.

Perez, 141 lbs won all cards by 39-37 tallies, and is mow 3-0. Molina, 138.9 lbs is 4-3.

Rick Pyle won a four round unanimous decision over Devin McMaster in a middleweight bout.

Pyle, 150 lbs of Harrisburg, PA won all cards by 40-36 scores, and is now 1-0. McMaster, 156 lbs of Allentown, PA is 1-2.

Dylan Price obliterated Manuel Guerra in round one of their scheduled four round super flyweight bout,

Price drilled Guerra with a perfect right hand that sent him down for the ten count at 1:09.

Price, 117 lbs of Sicklerville, NJ is 3-0 with three knockouts. Guerra, 112 lbs of Reynosa, MX is 1-3-1.

Cruz and Martin first clashed on a PBC card this January, with both men looking to bolster their perfect records at the time. It was a matchup featuring two distinct styles as the lankier orthodox Cruz favored using power punches throughout the fight while the southpaw Martin tried to box and ride his speed and jab to victory. The young welterweights delivered consistent exciting exchanges before the decision went to the judges, who delivered a split decision with one judging scoring the fight for Martin and two favoring the work of Cruz.

“I won the first fight between us and I’m here to prove that,” said Cruz. “I will be victorious again and this time everyone will be able to do it. I’m going to get the win in even more convincing fashion. I’m looking forward to this fight and I’m not planning on letting it go the distance.”

Born in Aguada, Puerto Rico and now residing in Lake Mary, Florida, the 26-year-old Cruz was a member of the Puerto Rico National Team as an amateur. He turned pro in 2012 and picked up five victories in 2015 as he ended fights with Virgil Green, Daniel Rodriguez, Eli Addison, Juan Rodriguez, Travis Hartman and Anthony Abbruzzese inside the distance. Cruz also earned a decision victory over previously unbeaten Samuel Figueroa in their May 2016 showdown before his triumph over Martin in January.

A highly-regarded amateur fighter out of Chicago, Martin was a 2012 Olympic alternate in addition to earning multiple National Golden Gloves titles and boasting a 340-10 record. The 27-year-old turned pro in April 2013 and stopped his first five opponents inside of the distance. Martin picked up two victories in 2016 beating experienced opponents Juan Carlos Abreu and Rosemberg Gomez before facing Cruz to start 2017.

A tall welterweight at 6’2″, James looks to bounce back after a decision loss to Yordenis Ugas last August in which the 28-year-old accepted the fight on less than a week’s notice. Fighting out of Minneapolis, Minnesota, James was unbeaten in his first 20 fights as a pro including impressive victories over Javier Molina and Wale Omotoso to begin his 2016 campaign.

Representing Anasco, Puerto Rico, Figueroa defeated previously once-beaten Ismat Eynullayev in March to get back in the win column after losing a narrow split-decision to the unbeaten Cruz last May. Herring, who represented the United States at the 2012 Olympic games after winning the U.S. National Amateur title the same year, commanded the action throughout.

“I knew if I boxed smart it would show, but I didn’t think it would be that wide a margin,” said Herring. “He’s a very experienced fighter.”

Herring added, “I was trying to get rid of him early because he’s a dangerous guy. If you let a guy like that sit around too long there’s always the risk that you might get clipped with something and regret it.”

Herring, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, hopes the win Tuesday night will launch him into world title contention in 2016.

Making his U.S. debut, the Magangue, Colombia native Flores put on a valiant effort, recovering from a flurry in the second round that would have sent most fighters packing.

In the fifth round, the 28-year-old Flores was ruled to have been knocked down twice, but disputes those calls by the ref. “Both times that the officials called it a knockdown and started counting were just slips. I didn’t actually get knocked down either time,” said Flores.

Flores added, “I know that (Herring) had the advantage tonight, and he outperformed me. But I’ll keep trying wherever my next opportunity comes.”

“I think getting a win like this over a fighter with Flores’ experience will help me gain a lot more respect. People seeing me win on my first PBC card on national TV on FS1 and FOX Deportes just helps raise my profile and I look forward to being back,” said Herring.

The opening televised bout featured unbeaten prospect Alex Martin (12-0, 5 KOs) defeatingmRossemberth Gomez (17-5-1, 13 KOs) by unanimous decision (80-72, 79-73, 79-73) in an eight-round welterweight contest.

Martin, a 2012 National Golden Gloves Champion, controlled much of the fight from the outside using his superior footwork to evade Gomez.

The Harvey, IL native Martin said, “I could see his punches coming from a mile away, but I should have followed up a little more than I did tonight and let my hands go a bit more too.”

An owner of 340 amateur wins, Martin turned pro in 2013 and is yet to lose. That experience helped Martin keep his composure when Gomez taunted him repeatedly in the second round.

“We wanted to make Martin mad and get him to punch himself out if we could,” said the 29-year-old Gomez.

Martin responded to the talk of baiting saying, “I just stuck to my fundamentals, kept pumping my jab and setting him up for the next shot.

“I knew I hurt him with the uppercut. He walked right into it. And then when I threw the hook he couldn’t do anything,” said Martin.

Following the bout Gomez said, “I plan to retire after tonight. I care too much and fight too hard to be just another opponent.”

The second televised fight saw Raynell Williams (11-0, 5 KOs) win a unanimous decision (79-73, 79-73, 78-74) over mGabriel Tolmajyan (14-3-2, 3 KOs) in eight rounds of lightweight action.

A member of the 2008 U.S. Olympic team, Cleveland’s Williams was able to establish himself early and get in a rhythm.

“The only time he was able to catch me with anything was when I got a little lazy,” said Williams.

Williams caught Tolmajyan with a big right hand in the fourth round, seemingly stunning Tolmajyan momentarily, but he kept his composure and didn’t allow himself to become overzealous.

“I was focused on boxing him and not so much worried about the knockout,” added Williams. “I knew I was winning the rounds.”

In the final frame, Tolmajyan, fighting out of Glendale, CA, caught Williams with a shot that nearly ended things.

Williams recalled, “It was an overhand left that he hit me with. And then he came after me again, but the ref and I made contact, so then the ref pushed me away because he didn’t want me to try holding on to him. But once I got my feet under me I was fine.”

However, Tolmajyan wasn’t impressed with Williams saying, “He wasn’t as good as we were expecting and I had him hurt with my left.

“I thought that I was winning the fight to be honest. I didn’t think I was going to lose the decision,” added Tolmajyan.

Williams concluded, “I hope to learn from my mistakes tonight. I got caught with a good punch in the last few seconds tonight, so I just need to work on consistency and fighting until the final bell.”

In off-television bouts, In a 4-round war, Carlos Roasrio was able to take a 4-round split decision over Victor Vasquez in a Lightweight bout.

The two traded heavy blows for the entire 12-minute fight but it was Rosario of Pennsauken, NJ that got the nod 39-37 twice while Vasquez of Yonkers, NY taking a card 39-37.

King’s Promotions David Gonzales scored a 4th round stoppage of his scheduled six-round Super Lightweight bout with Justin Johnson.

After a furious exchange in round four, Gonzales unloaded with a serious left to the body that put Johnson down for the ten count at 49 seconds of round four.

Gonzales, 142.7 lbs of Philadelphia is now 7-0-2 with 2 knockouts. Johnson of Pittsburgh, PA is 6-11-4.

“Training is good. I really do not know much about Gomez, but that doesn’t matter much at all because I just go in there and like to fight.”

Martin is ready to showcase his skills for the first time in front of a nationally televised audience and he knows this is just the beginning of positioning himself into bigger fights.

Without looking too far down the line, Martin would love a chance at his old amateur rival, Spence. Martin knows that he needs to continue winning and looking good to get that opportunity within in the next year.

“Spence is definitely on my radar. I can see us fighting by the end of 2016 or early 2017. I feel that I will be ready for that fight. Televised coverage begins at 11 p.m. ET/8 p.m. PT and is headlined by undefeated 2012 U.S. Olympian Jamel Herring (14-0, 8 KOs) taking on Colombia’s Luis Eduardo Flores (21-2, 17 KOs) in a 10-round lightweight bout.

Martin will take on Rossemberth Gomez (17-4-1, 13 KOs) in an eight-round welterweight bout, Williams faces Gabriel Tolmajyan (14-2-2, 3 KOs) in eight rounds of lightweight action while Clark takes on Elvin Perez (28-12-4, 19 KOs) in a six-round welterweight affair.

Further action features 25-year-old Philadelphia-native David Gonzales (6-0-2, 1 KO) battling Pittsburgh’s Justin Johnson (6-10-4) in a six-round super lightweight fight, 25-year-old Stivens Bujaj (14-0-1, 9 KOs) in cruiserweight action and New Jersey’s Bienvenido Diaz (2-1, 2 KOs) against Philadelphia’s Joseph Serrano in a four-round lightweight contest.

Rounding out the action is 24-year-old Sultah Staton (4-0, 2 KOs) of Philadelphia in a six-round super lightweight bout, Washington D.C.-native Jordan “Shortdog” White (1-0, 1 KOs) in a four round featherweight bout against Mexico’s Manuel Rubalcava (2-15) and Florida’s Santario Martin (1-2) battling New Jersey’s Darryl Bunting (0-0-1) in a four-round middleweight attraction.

In addition to his 2012 National Golden Gloves Championship, Martin won three Chicago Golden Gloves fighting out of nearby Harvey, Illinois. An owner of 340 amateur wins, Martin turned pro in 2013 and is yet to lose. The 26-year-old picked up four victories in 2015 and will begin 2016 against the 29-year-old Nicaraguan Gomez who will be making his U.S. debut.

A member of the 2008 U.S. Olympic team, Cleveland’s Williams looks to improve on an impressive 2015 campaign that saw him pickup five victories, including his October triumph over Rafael Eduardo Reyes. The 26-year-old will match up with the Armenian-born Tolmajyan who fights out of Glendale, California.

A highly-regarded prospect, the Cincinnati-native impressed in his hometown last time out by stopping Joe Wilson Jr. in the second round. The 21-year-old is unbeaten since turning pro in 2014. He’ll be up against the most experienced foe of his career when he takes on the Nicaraguan Perez.
