SAMUEL TEAH UPSETS ODDS; WINS BRISCOE AWARD

PHILADELPHIA – Samuel Teah pulled an upset last November at the 2300 Arena that outshined any other during 2018. Teah defeated the favored Kenneth Sims, Jr. of Chicago (13-1-1, 4 KOs) with a convincing unanimous decision, and he did it on the nationally televised SHOBOX TV series to boot.

Although going into the fight, their records were in the same ballpark (Teah was 14-2-1), Sam was still rebounding from an earlier so-so performance on SHOBOX that had some – certainly Team Sims – thinking that Teah couldn’t perform at the next level. However, Teah surprised everyone and scored the best win of his five-year boxing career. For that feat, he earned his first Briscoe Award.

The awards, named after Philly middleweight boxing legend Bennie Briscoe, have been recognizing the best achievements of the Philly boxing scene since 2007.

PAUL KROLL TO BE NAMED “2018 ROOKIE OF THE YEAR” AT BRISCOE AWARDS

PHILADELPHIA – Junior middleweight boxer Paul Kroll, a 2016 Olympian, made a great start to his professional boxing career in 2018, and was voted by fans as the best rookie in Philadelphia. Paul will receive his Briscoe Award at a public event on Sunday, April 14, 2019 at Xfinity Live! in South Philly.

Kroll made his debut in Philadelphia last August, blasting out DeAngelo Alcorn in the first round. He followed that with another stoppage (TKO2), this time against Antonio Wattell in Oklahoma City. Now that his delayed pro career is on track, he appears poised to make his move in 2019. The next step for Kroll is the Briscoe Awards, before more highly anticipated pro fights.

“It’s an honor to win the Briscoe Award, and it feels good to be recognized by my city,” Kroll said.

CHRISTIAN CARTO NAMED THE “ONE TO WATCH”

PHILADELPHIA – Local bantamweight boxer Christian Carto won four straight bouts in 2018 and improved his record to 17-0, with 11 KOs. These four fights included two local main events, and two supporting spots on big nationally televised cards. This was a year of development for Carto, as he went the distance in all four fights, mixed it up a bit more than we’re used to seeing, and faced a tougher level of competition. Along the way, Carto also established himself as one of the biggest box office attractions of the local scene.

For these factors, as well as his exciting style and promising future, Carto earned the award as “The One to Watch”, and will take home his first-ever Briscoe Award on Sunday, April 14, 2019, at Xfinity Live! in South Philly.

In his first start of 2019, Carto suffered his first professional set back, but for many reasons, he remains the fighter that everyone continues to watch, perhaps even more so after his most recent outing.

DANNY GARCIA TO RECEIVE “KO OF THE YEAR” HONOR AT BRISCOE AWARDS

PHILADELPHIA – Former two-time world champion Danny “Swift” Garcia scored the “2018 Knockout of the Year” with his ninth round stoppage of Brandon Rios, in February 2018.

Garcia, rebounding from his first-ever defeat as a professional, wore Rios down with his heavy artillery before blasting out the former champ with two knockdowns in round nine. The second knockdown was a picture-perfect overhand right to the jaw that sent Rios crashing to the floor, and ultimately ended the fight.

After a five year drought at the Briscoe Awards, Garcia’s KO of Rios earned him his fifth overall Briscoe Award, and his first for the best knockout.
