Danny Gonzalez ready for Chris Algieri Showdown

Queens, N.Y. “On January 18th, Star Boxing’s Danny “El Gallo” Gonzalez (17-1-1 7KO) of Woodhaven, NY; looks to seize the opportunity of making a splash in the hot Super-Lightweight division by taking on former world champion Chris Algieri (22-3 8KO). As part of a stellar card put forth by Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Promotions shown exclusively on DAZN, and taking place in the famed Hulu Theatre at Madison Square Garden; this cross-town rivalry is not just about title contention but bragging rights.

The up and coming Puerto Rican prospect Danny Gonzalez, is aiming to upset the apple cart in taking out former sparring partner Chris Algieri; who is in the comeback stage of his career at the age of 34. For the fighter known as “El Gallo”, the 28-year-old sees the chance to prove his supporters right and doubters wrong “A win over Algieri will most definitely put me in the spotlight, and hopefully turn me from a prospect to a contender while showing my friends and family how dedicated i’ve been to the sport.” Promoter Joe DeGuardia is known for turning local talents from ticket sellers to title holders, and pitting his two brightest stars against each other on such a big stage elevates the status of two fighters who know how to please a crowd.

While the focus on this matchup is whether or not Chris Algieri can return to former glory and higher pay days, Danny Gonzalez has dreamed of the chance to fight for a title since he first started training under the tutelage of head coach Moises Roman Jr. as an overweight teen looking to get in to shape over 10 years ago. Overlooked by general observers and his opponent alike, motivation is at an all-time high “I’m self-motivated, I only care about the opinions of my team… I believe in myself, I haven’t shown my full potential yet in the ring. I guarantee the best version of myself will show up January 18th, and I will shock the world.”

When asked on changes made for this camp Gonzalez had this to say: “The training is aggressive and focused like always but for this camp we brought in Felipe Gomez to sharpen up my movement and cutting off the ring, while focusing on my defense.” Taking place at 140lbs over 10 rounds, fitness is paramount when facing an opponent known to use up the whole ring, but a different approach was taken since the young fighter’s sole loss “I’m having fun and enjoying the training…I’m more open minded, setting a strategy for my opponent and not overworking myself while in camp.” Both men are known for their high levels of physical fitness as well as high punch outputs through their contrasting styles.

Having shared camps together and forming a friendship, “El Gallo” plans on putting their personal relationship on hold in pursuit of his goals; “The fans can expect an extremely entertaining fight from start to finish, I’m coming to bring an all-out war as I see Chris as an obstacle in my way. I’m coming to break him down and show him he can’t compete with a hungrier, younger Rooster like me. He is no longer my idol, now he’s my rival and i will not be denied victory.” Crossroad fights tend to bring out the best in fighters, Danny Gonzalez wants to raise his status and leapfrog Chris Algieri in the rankings to place him as a front runner for a title shot, opportunity is knocking at his door.”

Chris Algieri, Joe DeGuardia and Mike Stanton to be featured speakers at Ring 8 Meeting this Tuesday night at O’Neils Restaurant in Maspeth, New York

New York (November 19, 2018) – Former world junior welterweight champion champion Chris Algieri; his promoter Joe DeGuardia of Star Boxing and author Mike Stanton will be the featured guest speakers this Tuesday night at the Ring 8 meeting at O’Neill’s Restaurant in Maspeth, New York (64-21 53rd Dr, Maspeth, NY 11378) beginning at 7 PM

“All of our meetings have great guest speakers, but this one will be outstanding” said Ring8 president Jack Hirsch. “Chris Algieri will be boxing at the end of the month and will speak in detail about his latest comeback as well as his career. His promoter Joe DeGuardia will not only be talking about Algieri’s future plans, but also the other fighters who Star Boxing promotes. New York Times best selling author Mike Stanton will talk about his latest book, UNBEATEN, on former world heavyweight champion Rocky Marciano. The book has material on Marciano, that is revealing and has never before been published. Books will be available for sale.”

Algieri, who will be making his return to the ring on November 30th at the Paramount in Huntington, New York will discuss his career as he has forged a championship career in the ring as well as being a coveted health guru to many other world champions.

Former World Boxing Organization (WBO) Jr. Welterweight Boxing Champion, ISKA World Welterweight Kickboxing Champion and WKA World Super Welterweight World Kickboxing Champion, with over 13 years professional fight experience. Been featured on HBO PPV, HBO Boxing After Dark, NBC Primetime, Showtime EXTREME, PBC on Spike, ESPN Friday Night Fights, and NBC Sports.
Algieri established himself as the ‘Pride of Huntington’, fighting in Long Island, NY just miles from his hometown of Greenlawn at The Paramount Theater in Huntington, NY, selling out the Theater eight consecutive times. He then went on to headline HBO’s Boxing After Dark, where he staged Ring Magazine’s Upset of 2014, by defeating Ruslan Provodnikov to win the WBO Super Lightweight World title at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. This led to the biggest fight of his life…

In only his 21st Professional Boxing match; Chris moved up in weight to fight the future Hall of Famer, Manny Pacquiao, in Macao China on HBO Pay Per View. Chris dropped the decision to the Philippino Great, but earned much respect in defeat. The world tour that preceded the build up to fight night saw 7 countries and exposed Chris to countless fans from all over the world.

Joining Algieri will be his longtime promoter Joe DeGuardia.

DeGuardia, who is the President of Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing has promoted countless world champions and championship fights over the past two-plus decades.

Joe began promoting boxing fights in 1992, founding Star Boxing, a boxing promotional company originally based in the Bronx, NY. For the last 26 years, DeGuardia has been professionally active in the boxing industry promoting. Past and present, boxers promoted by Star Boxing include former world champion Antonio Tarver, two time World Champion and 2008 US Olympian Demetrius Andrade, former WBO Jr. Welterweight champion Chris Algieri, former IBF Welterweight champion Joshua Clottey, former Heavyweight contender Vinny Maddalone and former WBC International Light Heavyweight champ Joe Smith Jr.. In 2016, DeGuardia moved Star Boxing’s offices to White Plains, NY.

Stanton will be talking about his terrific book titled “Unbeaten,” which is a story about Rocky Marciano – The son of poor Italian immigrants, with short arms and stubby legs, Rocky Marciano accomplished a feat that eluded legendary heavyweight champions like Joe Louis, Jack Dempsey, Muhammad Ali, and Mike Tyson: He never lost a professional fight. His record was a perfect 49-0.
Unbeaten is the story of this remarkable champion who overcame injury, doubt, and the schemes of corrupt promoters to win the title in a bloody and epic battle with Jersey Joe Walcott in 1952. Rocky packed a devastating punch with an innocent nickname, “Suzie Q,” against which there was no defense. As the champ, he came to know presidents and movie stars – and the organized crime figures who dominated the sport, much to his growing disgust. He may have “stood out in boxing like a rose in a garbage dump,” as one sportswriter said, but he also fought his own private demons.

In the hands of the award-winning journalist and biographer Mike Stanton, Unbeaten is more than just a boxing story. It’s a classic American tale of immigrant dreams, exceptional talent wedded to exceptional ambitions, compromises in the service of a greater good, astounding success, disillusionment, and a quest to discover what it all meant. Like Suzie Q, it will knock you off your feet.

Provodnikov (23-2, 16 KOs), born and raised in Berezovo, Khanty-Mansi, Russia in Siberia, is trained by Hall of Famer Freddie Roach. He had an incredible year in 2013. On March 16, he was on the wrong end of a hotly-disputed unanimous decision loss to undefeated WBO welterweight champion Timothy Bradley, Jr. Provodnikov, who moved up in weight for his first title shot, hurt Bradley numerous times during their slugfest, nearly knocking out the defending champion in the first and second rounds and scoring a knockdown in the final round.

Two of the three scorecards had Bradley winning by only one point. It was voted the Fight of the Year by the Boxing Writers Association of America. Provodnikov moved down to his natural weight in his next fight and challenged WBO junior welterweight champion Mike Alvarado, scoring a dramatic 10th round stoppage to claim his world title, last October 19. Five of Provodnikov’s last six victories have been by knockout.

Algieri (19-0 8 KOs), hails from nearby Huntington, NY. Over the last 18 months Chris has elevated himself to a world-class contender after accumulating significant victories over top prospect Jose Alejo, former USBA champion Mike Arnaoutis, and most recently highly-rated contender Emmanuel Taylor in February. He’s as much a scholar as he is a brawler. He graduated from Stony Brook University with Honors in 2007 with a Bachelors of Science in Health Care Management and then went on to receive his Masters degree from the New York Institute of Technology. He aspires to attend Medical School.

Andrade (20-0, 13 KO), of Providence, RI, has been a mainstay on television since making his professional debut following his stint on the 2008 U.S. Olympic team. Co-promoted by Banner Promotions and Star Boxing, Andrade’s aggressive style has attracted and created fans on both coasts of the U.S. He captured the vacant world title on November 9, defeating fellow U.S. Olympian Vanes Martirosyan in a battle of undefeated top-rated contenders. One doesn’t have to look any further than his recent record where Andrade has stopped five of his last eight opponents. Career highlights include victories over former world title challengers Freddy Hernandez and Angel Hernandez as well as former Contender champion Grady Brewer.

Rose (25-1-1, 7 KOs), from Blackpool, Lancashire, England, will be fighting outside the United Kingdom for the first time. He enters his first world title tilt riding a four-year, 11-bout winning streak, which has included BBBofC British, BBBoC English and WBO Inter-Continental junior middleweight title victories. In his last fight, on October 26, he won a split decision over Javier Maciel in a title elimination bout which made Rose the WBO’s mandatory junior middleweight challenger and No. 1 contender.
